REGISTERING SETINFO AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
=============================================
SetInfo is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
following.
7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
See the documentation which should accompany this file for more information
on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should also accompany this file.
Please use it to register the software.
USING SETINFO
==============
• If you use SetInfo, please please please send me a note. My addresses
(post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
information in the above section on registration.
• Read further if you plan to use SetInfo with aliases.
What Does SetInfo Do?
--------------------
• SetInfo, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box), sets file info for selected
items. You can modify the type, creator, label, finder flags, and locked
bit of files and folders just by dragging them over the application icon.
It also works with System 6.0.X.
Using SetInfo
------------
• Drag items (files and/or folders) to be modified over SetInfo’s icon, just
as you would drag those items into a folder. SetInfo will then modify the
selected information. You can set the information in the File Settings
item in the File menu.
• Double-click on SetInfo to see the about box information and to modify the
File Info Settings and the Preferences. You can also modify files in manual
mode by double-clicking on the icon (so this program can be used by
pre-7.0 Systems).
• Hold down the shift key to bypass the warning alert. Depress the option
key to modify the preferences, and hold option-shift to modify the file
info settings.
SetInfo and Aliases
------------------
• Since the Finder resolves all aliases when you drop them into a Drop Box,
SetInfo can only think that you dropped the target (not the alias)
in to be modified. The way to overcome this problem is to put the aliases
you wish to modify into their own directory and drag that folder into the
Drop Box. If you don't want the folder to be modified, hold down the option
key so you can modify the appropriate preferences. The rule with Drop Boxes
is that if you drop in an alias, the target is modified. If an alias is inside
a directory that is dropped in, the alias is modified.
USING DROP BOXES
=================
Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
and thus their target (parent) is modified.
Preferences
-----------
• The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don't want to see that
window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything. The
preferences apply ONLY to Drop Box mode. They are not consulted when in
Manual mode.
• The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
alert before modifying anything. By choosing to modify directories, you
have decided that folders themselves can be modified. You can modify files
and folders inside those folders which you have dropped in by checking the
Modify contents box. For example, if you drop in a folder containing three files
and another folder, and have Modify contents on but Modify directories off, the
folders’ info will remain unmodified, but the info for all contained files
(including those inside the second folder) will be changed.
• To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
option key while the program is launching.
FILE INFO SETTINGS
==================
• Hold down the option key while clicking on a check box to tell SetInfo to
leave that bit alone (it won’t be changed).
• Click the None button to make SetInfo leave files unmodified. This way you
start with a clean slate to make the desired modifications to files.
• Buttons with gray inside tell SetInfo to leave the given bit unmodified when
working on a file. Checked buttons tell SetInfo to set the bit, and clear
buttons tell SetInfo to clear that bit.
• Choose the Same As... button to get info on a specific file. The File Settings
will be set up to reflect those of the chosen file.
• The bits are self-explanatory. If you don’t know what they do, you probably
shouldn’t use them.
• The Finder is a bit eccentric about modifying some bits. It may not test the
bits until the next time the Finder is launched, so don’t worry if you set, say,
the Stationery bit, and nothing happens.
